American Yellowwood (Cladrastis lutea) 18-24 inches tall
A medium-sized deciduous tree, typically reaching 30–50 feet tall and wide. It is known for its fragrant, white, pea-like flowers, which appear in showy, drooping clusters in alternate years. It is planted for shade, accents, and its multi-seasonal interest, with light green foliage that turns yellow in the fall and smooth, greyish-yellow bark in winter. Provide full sun and moist, well-drained limestone soil.
American Yellowwood produces profuse, fragrant, white flower clusters similar to wisteria in mid- to late spring which attracts bees and other pollinators. Compound leaves are light green, turning a bright yellow in the fall. The smooth, gray-yellow bark is a distinctive feature in winter. Provides cover for birds and its seed pods are a food source for wildlife.
Has a deep root system, allowing other shade-loving plants to grow underneath. Plant in full sun for best flowering, though it tolerates partial shade in hotter climates. Water regularly for the first few years to establish a strong root system; it is moderately drought-tolerant once established. Prune in the summer after flowering to prevent excessive sap bleeding. Protect young trees from strong winds.
The tree's wood contains a yellow dye that gives it its common name. Hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8.
